4,280 shopping trolleys were collected over a 12 month period in the city of Swan at a cost of $42,000 to the rate payers.

What’s interesting about these figures, is that the trial occurred during the COVID pandemic, when the majority of Perth was in lock down, which may have resulted in underrepresenting the number of trolleys that would need collecting during normal trading.

Looking at the figures, Coles lost 1233, Woolworths 947, Big W 743, Kmart 470, Target 248 IGA Midland 227, Aldi 110, Spudshed 103, Bunnings 75, Gilbert’s Fresh Markets 35 with the remaining 99 trolleys belonging to other minor retailers (combined).

Aldi – still lost 110 trolley’s despite having a coin lock system, while Spudshed Midland, equally lost 103. Many community members, Centre managers and councillors are all led to believe that the coin lock system prevents lost or abandoned trolleys, which it clearly doesn’t.
